June 24, 2010

354-430.  Bishop of Hippo (in present-day Algeria) and Doctor of the Church.  One of the four great Western Fathers (with SS. Ambrose, Jerome and Gregory).  Catholic Encyclopedia article here.  Probably the most important writer of Christian antiquity; his works are literary masterpieces of unparalleled exegetical insight.  His most famous works are the Confessions, often called the first autobiography, and the monumental City of God (De civitate Dei).  His twelve-book On the literal interpretation of Genesis is also very important.
