St. Bede the Venerable

June 24, 2010

672-735.  English priest, monk, historian and Doctor of the Church.  Catholic Encyclopedia article here.  Famous for his Ecclesiastical History of the English People.  His exegesis of the first 21 chapters of Genesis (somewhat misleadingly entitled Hexameron, or Four Books on the beginning of Genesis), is remarkable for its combination of the best insights of earlier exegetes (primarily St. Augustine) with St. Bede’s own equally valuable commentaries.
