St. Jerome

June 24, 2010

347-420.  Priest, exegete, scholar (born near Dalmatia, present-day Croatia).  Catholic Encylopedia article here.  Translated the Old Testament from the Hebrew to Latin; with his revision of the Latin text of the New Testament this constitutes the Latin Vulgate, the standard Biblical text of the Catholic Church.  His extensive knowledge of Hebrew, Greek and Latin, as well as his proximity in time to the original Biblical texts, made him an ideal translator.  He also wrote many exegetical works.  His Liber hebraicarum quaestionum in Genesim (Book of Hebrew questions about Genesis) is a very useful commentary on issues of text and translation in Genesis.
