St. John Chrysostom

June 24, 2010

347-407.  Bishop of Constantinople and Doctor of the Church.  Possibly the greatest Eastern Father.  Catholic Encyclopedia article here.  His surname means “golden-mouth,” a name given to him because of his immensely eloquent preaching.  His 67 Homilies on Genesis, transcriptions of sermons he delivered in Antioch in the 390s, constitute one of the most important and complete commentaries on the beginning of the Bible.
